08/23/2010 - Thirty-eight years ago, the nation got its first major anti-water pollution law, the Clean Water Act.  It was one of those cases where government worked.  Many rivers and lakes became noticeably cleaner and less noticeably, harbored fewer toxic chemicals.  Sport fisheries and summer recreation rebounded.  That was as true in Minnesota as anywhere in the U.S.  But now the signs are mixed, and some are warnings, not rewards.

07/26/2010 - Hungry for good news about the environment and conservation?  Believe it or not, in Minnesota there's lots of it.  In the year of the BP oil spill, the failure of the U.S. Congress to do anything meaningful about climate change, and frequent news about new pollutants showing up in our waters, the appetite for offsetting good news grows.  Last week, our executive director Paul Austin demonstrated that in a post on the Minneapolis Star Tribune web site. 06/28/2010 - An annual fundraiser for Friends of the Mississippi (FMR) comes as both good and bad signs of the river's health are emerging in the Twin Cities region.

The annual Mississippi River Challenge, July 24-25, enables participants to have fun paddling and learning about the river through the heart of the Twin Cities. This fully-supported, one- or two-day, 22- or 44-mile paddle event is a great way to enjoy the great river’s charms while helping to protect them. The trip features an overnight stay at historic Fort Snelling, and includes a trip through the only true gorge on the entire length of the Mississippi and three sets of locks, showing how the river has been harnessed for human purposes.
