John's Pick:Incumbent Tenn. congressman loses primary after 'Big Oil' attack

I missed this report when it came out earlier in August, but after running across it yesterday I found it very intriguing.  One of the central issues in the August 7th primary for this Tennessee congressional seat was the incumbent taking money from "big oil".  The fact that a Republican incumbent was defeated in a primary in part because he saddled up to "big oil" shows the depth of dissatisfaction in the electorate over our present energy structure.--John

Study to Determine Phosphorus Source in Pine River Watershed

Three foundations recently granted $30,000 to the Pine River Watershed Alliance (PRWA) to scientifically and comprehensively determine how much phosphorus is entering a creek feeding the Pine River and where that phosphorus originates.

Catherine Friend's follow up to her memoir, Hit by a Farm, is a good companion book to Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma and Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle in that it is written by a small, sustainable farmer.  Friend compares animals' lives on large CAFOs with those on conventional and sustainable farms.
