This amendment would increase statewide greenhouse gas reduction goals, changing Minnesota’s 2050 target from an 80% reduction (compared to 2005 levels) to net-zero.
In 2007, Minnesota passed the bipartisan Next Generation Energy Act, setting statutory goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. Since then, international climate scientists have determined that a more robust goal is required to limit the worst impacts of climate change. This amendment updates the Next Generation Energy Act goals, increasing Minnesota’s commitment to a goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
