Preventing CWD in Deer & Elk | A58 (SF 4062)

Senate voted No
| April 21, 2022
About this Legislation

Chronic wasting disease is a major threat to deer, elk, and moose in Minnesota. One of the largest sources of CWD positivity in Minnesota comes via cervid (deer & elk) farms, which are for-profit, privately-maintained facilities that artificially breed herds for paid hunts. Captive operations regularly transport deer and elk and maintain unnaturally high-density herds, leading to high rates of disease transmission.

The A58 Amendment prohibits the registration of new deer farms and the importation of white-tailed deer into the state from farmed deer or elk herds.

Status

The amendment failed and CWD-preventative farming prohibitions were not included in the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Omnibus bill.

What a no means

A "no" vote allows the registration of new deer farms and the importation of white-tailed deer into the state, maintaining a major source of CWD transmission.

What a yes would have meant

A "yes" vote prohibits the registration of new deer and elk farms and the importation of white-tailed deer into the state, curbing a major source of CWD transmission.
